The City of Birmingham and Birmingham City Schools partner for literacy town hall 

  • Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin and Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan will host a town hall on Tuesday, August 30 to encourage community support of kindergarten to third-grade literacy. The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Boutwell Auditorium, located at 1930 Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard.   

  • Parents of children K-3, local literacy groups, current and retired educators, faith communities and residents are invited to learn how to support Birmingham children in achieving grade-level literacy.  For more information about the town hall, go to https://www.bhamyouthfirst.org/page-pals/.

* New Vegan Burger restaurant to open this weekend * 

  • Slutty Vegan’s grand opening will be held Sunday, Aug. 21 in the heart of Woodlawn at 7 – 55th Place South. 

    • Slutty Vegan is known for its plant-based burgers. A block party will be held from 12 to 6 p.m. A ribbon cutting with Slutty Vegan founder and CEO Pinky Cole, Mayor Randall L. Woodfin and others will be held at 1 p.m. The block party will feature DJ Chris Coleman; Dave and the Party Rockers; 40 vendors; and break dancers. The event will be held rain or shine. * Family Movie Night in the park *  

  • Birmingham Park and Rec has announced it will host Family Movie Night at different city parks through October 13. This special program, known as “Parks After Dark,” is for all ages and free to the public. The movies will start at sunset.

    • One Pratt Park – Sept. 1

* Operation Hope launches new digital platform *   

  • Operation Hope is excited to announce the launch of a new digital platform which will improve the process and overall employee experience.  Going forward, all City of Birmingham employees will need to register for workshops and/or one-on-one coaching using a customized HOPE code. The HOPE code will be used by City of Birmingham employees one time for registration.  Employees will need to create a username and password during the registration process to use for all subsequent services.  

    • Below is an outline of the process: 

      • Register at  https://portal.operationhope.org/ 

      • Complete the registration fields and add the custom HOPE code HITW6 in the last field on the registration page 

      • Complete Operation HOPE profile with personal information 

      • Employees/participants will be assigned to Financial Wellbeing Coach, Judy Woods 

      • Once the coach assignment is complete employees/participants can sign up for group education and/or individual coaching sessions

  • Birmingham Folk Fest  

    • Featuring live blues, jazz, bluegrass, folk, gospel and more. Local vendors. Kid activities. Avondale Amphitheater. 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. Free to all. Details attached.

  • Alabama Launchpad, a program of the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama(EDPA), is proud to announce its partnership with the Alabama Power Foundation, launching the first statewide Alabama Launchpad: Social Impact Competition. This inaugural Social Impact Competition is fit for entrepreneurs who are intent on making a positive impact on society through their startup.
